Lately I've been having fun leaving my hair in its natural state, and a few questions/comments on my curls prompted me to make this tutorial. I was in a bit of a rush so I hope it makes sense - it's extremely simple!
(Excuse the pallor, I still can't be bothered with make-up so I was only wearing eyeliner)
(Excuse the pallor, I still can't be bothered with make-up so I was only wearing eyeliner)
To recap, the steps are:
~ Scrunch product through your hair. I recommend something that will add moisture (I use almond oil
) and something that will tame frizz (I swear by pure aloe vera gel
) - gel also helps hold the curl
~ Following your natural curl pattern, twist sections of your hair around your finger
~ I don't part my hair any specific way, but if you do, make sure you let your hair dry in the way you want your hair to part (I normally clip the front section back)
~ Don't comb your hair until it is completely dry. If you have wavy/curly hair, combing your hair when it's wet will lead to frizz and can also damage or break the hair. Also, it's better to use a wide-toothed comb as opposed to a brush - the latter makes my hair huge and frizzy and can lead to breakage
~ Add more aloe vera gel to your hair when dry if there is still any frizz remaining
In the video, I referred to a Friend Friday vlog where I had dried my hair as described in this tutorial but hadn't combed it through; if you're interested to see how that looks, click here.
As you can see, this is incredibly simple; I'd love to know if it works for you, too, and if you have any tips/tricks for working with curly hair, please share!

Great vlog! I've got dead straight hair and have always wanted curly/wavy locks! It's always the way, wanting what you don't have!
ReplyDeleteHave a great weekend darling and bake something yummy soon!
x.o.x.o
Sigh,.... I wish I had your hair instead of my slick & straight hair. Curls are so sassy and cute at the same time.
ReplyDeleteAnyway, I'm going to try a mix of what you did here in the video and another scheme that a friend taught me, so I can have curly hair at least 2 days in a row. ^.^
Lots of love,
Sarah.
Hi sweetie, let me start off by saying that you are my kind of perfect too <3 you are wonderful.
ReplyDeleteI have had a love/hate relationship with my curls too, my sis has fab blonde straight hair, and I always wanted hers, but now I am loving my scottish locks :) have a lovely weekend!
thanks for posting that tutorial! I however have super poker straight hair, wish I have lovely wavy hair like yours =)
ReplyDeleteHave a great weekend!
i've been wishing for curly hair, your look great. loved watching the tutorial ;)

You know I've always admired your hair! Thanks for the video :-)
ReplyDeleteI will try your strategy, especially the crunching and twisting part - though my hair is not that curly (it's more "wavy") perhaps it might enhance my waves. And do you have a specific reason for using almond oil? I tried jojoba and coconut oil, but both are to heavy for my rather finer hair. Even when I take only two drops, I end up having really greasy looking strands and can't wear my hair down for the next day (my hair always need a day to "suck" the oil in). And do you feel your curls are enhanced by the layered haircut? (wouldn't be an option for me, though - not enough hair ;-) I just reached my goal length of waist but am struggling with thin ends, so I'll do microtrimms for a while).
I can't wait till my hair is long enough to start wearing it in its natural curls... it looks like I stuck my finger in a socket at the mo!
ReplyDeleteLove it! My hair is wavy but I cant never make it look nice :)
ReplyDeleteOh, the sorrow that is my hair...
ReplyDelete(I've spent the past two hours reading gothic literature, which is why that sentence is so weird)
I *love* your hair, and I *wish* I could make mine look half-decent - but so many people tell me so many conflicting things that I don't know what to believe anymore!
I will definitely try this one, though!
Thanks!
xo A
Ah brilliant, thanks for this! I have naturally wavy hair so will try this out over the weekend :)
ReplyDeleteThanks for the tutorial! Definitely gonna try it out!
ReplyDeleteYour hair is wonderful!
ReplyDeleteAnd with your tips, more girls will
embrace their curls.
My friendly tip is use organic hair products. It will make your curls even more beautiful. Cheers!
Your hair looks lovely, Leia! I wish my hair would actually hold a curl like this! Mine is so fine it never wants to cooperate! Lol.
ReplyDeleteYour hair is so gorgeous -- as someone with totally straight, flat hair I'm envious of your curly, thick mane!

Cute vid - is your hair thick? I'm not sure this would work for my fine hair :(

What a fun VLog! You look absolutely adorable, Leia! My hair is more frizzy as opposed to being curly and/or pin-straight!! :P
ReplyDeleteThough this wouldn't work for me ... I was still happy to hear your voice :)
ReplyDeleteMy hair is straight...but I love this editorial! I also love that you use almond oil. lol
ReplyDeleteOh Leia this is awesome, maybe now I'll embrace my curls
ReplyDeleteI have major hair envy! After years of thinking I had stick straight hair, I have learned that it has a wave. Literally, one wave. How I wish for wavy, curly hair! Guess the grass is always greener! :) PS--Thanks so much for the almond oil tip.
ReplyDeletei always wanted curly hair. lol.now my hair is naturally wavy and i straighten it every day lol
ReplyDeleteyour hair is lovely!! don't straighten it too much or it'll lose its curl
ReplyDeletehttp://itscohen.blogspot.com/
i would never have thought to use aloe vera! i have curly hair too. it's super fine and thin, so i really need my curls to do their job and make it at least LOOK like i have some hair. :P
ReplyDeletei totally swear by a wide comb too. unless i'm blowing it out straight, i NEVER brush my hair (something non curly haired people find odd, i've found :P).
hope you have a lovely weekend!
I always love your vlogs, and honestly, now I want curly hair, too. Even with straight hair I stick to a wide-toothed comb to not break the hair. xoxo
ReplyDeleteGreat vlog. Love your hair like that!! :)SArahD
ReplyDeleteMy hair has a wave in it so I might give this a go to see if it works. Thanks Leia
ReplyDeleteLike the commenter before me, I have thick naturally wavy hair, so I'm going to try this myself. Many thanks for the video--you make it look so easy.
ReplyDeleteYAY SO EXCITED for your hair tutorial vlog! :) can't wait to try out your method!
ReplyDeletexoxo
I love letting my naturally wavy/curly texture shine through...especially in the summer. Yours looks gorgeous!
ReplyDeleteThe end effect is really nice too! Nice job on putting the tutorial video together.
ReplyDeleteLove your hair. I am sure everyone would like to see long hair of yours in future
ReplyDeleteI'm going to grow my hair out so that I can do this :)It's pretty!
ReplyDeleteWow, so pretty.
ReplyDeleteyoure soo pretty! I have wavy hair that I love when its behaved. On most days though its a downright biznatch to handle. This vlog should help me rehabilitate the jungle that sits atop my head!
ReplyDeleteThank you for the comment, sorry i took so long to get back to you! i love your blog!
Ina:)
I love your hair. I've got really straight hair, but always dream of having curls instead! :)
ReplyDeleteI love how much volume your hair has Leia! I think it always looks great! If I don't blow dry my hair it has a bit of a wave to it but never with as much beautiful volume as yours, even when I apply product!
ReplyDeleteGorgeous! You are so beautiful, it's hard for me to get my hair to go curly or straight, thanks for the tutorial! XX!
ReplyDeleteyou hair is awesome. I have to fry my hair with a curling iron to get it remotely curly like yours.
ReplyDeleteYour hair is lovely. I'm the same as some of the comments. My hair is naturally poker straight and I have to properly set curls in my hair to have any chance of them staying in!
ReplyDeleteGreat tutorial.. You have lovely hair and I love curling my hair as well =)
ReplyDeleteyou're so pretty! My stupid computer needs a sound card so I can't hear you :( But you look very pretty! I love dark, curly hair. My mom always had very long curly hair when I was growing up, it's so pretty!
ReplyDeletewow nice tutorial leia.. you have gorgeous hair :)
ReplyDeleteHello my lovely...gosh I LOVE your glorious mane!
ReplyDelete...you are so beautiful Leia.
My hair is naturally curly. I am very low maintenance, just wash and dry really.
To enhance my curls, after washing, I apply a 'beach hair' / brine spray and just finger comb, scrunch my hair... if hot weather I just leave to dry, if not or if I'm in a rush I will do a quick blow dry.
I very rarely brush my hair, which is bad I know... to compensate, I always massage my scalp and hair with coconut oil, before I wash my hair.
In my twenties, I did do more with my hair, regularly visited a hairdresser... even straightened my hair!...but now... I'm just a jungli...!!
I really need that tutorial Leia...i am so bad with hair styling!!! OMG!!!! this is really helpful my dear!!!

Fun! I'm a scruncher too, but I've never tried the twisting...going to have to do that! I have slightly wavy hair, so it might work!

Ohhh I loved this. I am so doing this to my hair tomorrow. I have to get aloe gel first though.
ReplyDeletex
I am so late with seeing this post- I never noticed it on my google reader. I have similar hair though so i might try some of your tips! I do the same scrunch and twist technique with my own hair but my curls never look as nice as yours! I never thought of trying Aloe vera gel.Night have to do that. :)
ReplyDeleteI use to also hate my wavy hair, but now I dont mind it. My hair is pretty similar to yours, curly down the bottom and straighter at the top. I will deffinately have to try what you have dont here in your video! Had you combed and towel dried your hair before starting the video?
ReplyDeleteRose
I naturally have straight hair; the kind most people are jealous about. But I absolutely hate it!!! So I live my life with curly hair (I get it permed once a year) frizz or no frizz :) your hair is really beautiful, I would kill for such great natural curly hair!!
ReplyDeleteGorgeous hair! Mine is naturally straight(with some annoying kinks in it!) and unless I use heat and alot of hairspray any curls I put in it are gone within a few hours!
ReplyDeleteYou have beautiful hair, I wish I could curl mine. You have seen it all straight, I DON'T STRAIGHTEN IT!! Its mad straight and refuses to curl! I had it permed 2 years ago and loved it for a while, but I like the puffy 80's style so I brushed it out so it was massive, it was more fun!

ReplyDeleteI have very long naturally curly hair. I have to comb my hair when it's wet, or I'd never get a comb through it. While it's wet, I use a spray gel and scrunch. I always let it air dry. I always get lots of compliments on how pretty my hair is. I find that if I use a really good conditioner, I don't have to spend so much on the rest of my hair products. Now, if I combed my hair when it's dry, frizz city and it looks terrible.
