Why do bloggers share their outfits?
It occured to me that bloggers probably have different reasons for posting pictures of their outfits online. When I started blogging and subsequently reading blogs, I realised that my favorite blogs were (and still are) the ones that feature regular outfit posts. I started doing the same because I thought it was the 'norm.'
At first, I wasn't comfortable with taking pictures of myself and putting them on my blog. I used to blur out my face, telling myself it was for 'privacy' but really it was because I thought that my face didn't look nice in photographs. In fact, I've never been happy to be in front of the camera! I could conceivably have stopped sharing outfits when I discovered that you can have a successful fashion blog without posting your outfits, but ... I didn't.
I mentioned earlier that most of the blogs that I follow post outfits on a regular basis. I asked myself why this is. I'm not a fashionista and I don't look at blogs to find inspiration or read fashion news. I don't read blogs where the blogger dresses like me or dresses in a way that I aspire to dress. In fact, some of my favorite bloggers wear outfits that I would never DREAM of wearing (either because they're not my style or I just plain don't like them). I read blogs because I like the blogger. She's interesting to me - she writes about her life, what she's been doing - and I find that fascinating. She illustrates this through her outfits. Whether or not it's an outfit that I personally like, her pictures allow me to get to know her better: her personality shines through her photographs, her poses, her expressions, and, of course, her ensembles. I'm also a very visual person: when I look at a blog post, I want to see lots of pretty pictures! That's why I follow very few blogs where outfit posts are not a regular feature.
Essentially, I read blogs because I'm interested in the lives of these individuals, and seeing pictures of them serves as a perfect illustration.
I hope to do the same via my outfit posts: show readers a slice of my life through my pictures. Also, let's not sell short the fact that it's fun to share my latest fashion/beauty finds, and I like to read about these on other blogs as well!
Unexpected benefits of outfit posts:
- I've become more comfortable in front of the camera. I still shy away from cameras when other people are taking pictures, because I look anemic/sick and downright ugly in most pictures that I haven't taken myself, but I have at least begun to learn the art of self-photography and hopefully one day this will lead me to being confident in front of the lens.
- I've become more aware of my body shape. This has both pros and cons, because it means that I can nitpick at my flaws, but it also means I can tell which outfits are figure-flattering and which are not.
- My blog has become a sort of virtual closet: if I can't decide what to wear and need some ideas, I can just look at some previous outfits and I'll know exactly which pieces and combinations I liked! It also stops me from wearing the same outfit to an event where I know I'll be seeing the same people - I just look up what I wore to ___ occasion and make sure I find something different.
- And finally, it pushes me to try new things or to break out of a rut. If I feel as though I'm posting the same type of outfit again and again, I force myself to wear something different and be a bit more creative.
So, that's why I share my outfits with my readers. It's not because I'm vain, or because I think I'm incredibly well-dressed, or even because I'm passionate about fashion (I'm not, really, I just like pretty clothes! I've learned that there's definitely a difference between 'dressing up' and being a 'fashionista'). It's because I observed something that I liked on other blogs, and decided to recreate it myself, hoping to generate the same interest that piques me when I read blogs.
If you post outfits or pictures of yourself online, why do you do it? I'd love to know!

You saw my lame attempt at posting pictures of my outfit right?! Honestly I love the confidence of all the fashion bloggers.
ReplyDeleteI primarily blog about healthy living but have branched out into reading different genres cuz well reading about others lives is fascinating :)
Hi Leia!
ReplyDeleteI blog because I have always felt that my weight was never where it should be and I never liked taking pictures so I started doing it to get that self esteem in check. If I can't feel good about myself than no one will.
Even though I eat right as best as I can and work out quite a bit I still have some issues with how I look at times but I do believe it's getting better.
I am not a size 0 so I wanted my blog to represent that I do not have to be a certain size to be pretty. We are all beautiful. This may sound corny but I believe that beauty starts from inside and projects outwardly.
Thanks for your insight. I love checking out what people are wearing all the time, part of the job, which means I have to absorb everthing!

I am really self conscious in front of the camera which is why i dont do outfit posts more often but i am trying to face my fear.
ReplyDeleteI rarely have outfit posts but I like visiting blogs such as yours because of the same reason. I want to see how everyone dresses in different parts of the world :)
ReplyDeleteDefinitely, Maybe
you always look fab.. but u look ultra gorgeous in saree :)
ReplyDeleteoutfit blogs are the best way to be yourself in front of the world. Beyond doubt u doing a fantastic job in that.
Such an interesting post, Leia! I remember when I did my first outfit shot (so terrifying) and if I look back at those first few, I still cringe a little. Now, I find that I enjoy outfit posts, because they tend to encourage me to think more about what I'm wearing, and how to wear different garments in different ways. I agree--my favorite blogs are primarily outfit post ones, with a bit of personal narrative. And while I am inspired by some, a lot of them dress pretty differently than I would!
ReplyDeleteAmazing post! It's like you're in my head! I do exactly the same thing! This is why I find it so hard to comment and follow blogs that appear to be "anonymous" (e.g. no outfit pics, just products or pics of just a body without a face). I guess I prefer visual contact or some sort of intimacy. I think my blog friends as my very real friends and hope I'll meet them all one day! Kisses :)
ReplyDeleteu r exactly right.....
ReplyDeleteI do agree with you in all your points. I could have writtet the post. Amazing: different yet connected in the essence.
ReplyDeleteXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
You always write the most amazing posts, Leia! I find that I am still fairly uncomfortable in front of the camera - despite the fact that I love to show off my ensembles! :P
ReplyDeleteInteresting post!! I started outfit posts 'coz it seems exciting to me ... I wasn't terrified to share my pictures at all ... i am actually thrilled.
ReplyDeleteP.S. To avoide writing a long essay on your post, I think have shared more on this topic Here.
Enjoy your trip Leia! :)

At first I thought it was the norm too, but then again I thought I wouldn't be able to do it because I never liked the way I looked in photos. But then one day I put a little bit of effort into how I looked and the photos came out really beautiful, maybe for the first time in my life. And thus my first outfit post was born. In a lot of ways I am like you, I read some blogs just because I like the person, not so much their take on style but their personality and their blog gives me a chance to experience their life. But then again I follow a lot of blogs purely for the visual pleasure, I don't talk to those ladies, just go in and look at the pretty photos. :) But one thing for sure, if I had not started outfit blogging I would have never become confident that I can look good infront of a camera. :)
ReplyDeleteLove
what a wonderful post leia. I love the way you write. I agree my favoutire blogs do outfit posts too and I feel bad I dont do them. I dont know why....I think i have too high aims for myself, to post photos I should have a proper camera and a great camera man/woman and bla bla bla so I end up never doing it. It has nothing to do with confidence because as you can see from my FB i love posing for the camera. My favourite blogger Michaela Forni does her outfit photos with her photobooth on her mac and though they are not the clearest photos I still love her blog. I wish i could give myself a break...
ReplyDeletethanks for this post. hope you're having a lovely weekend.
Dena x
I have similar reasons! I post outfit posts (although not regularly) NOT because I think I'm stylish. Ha! I'm so not. But because dressing up is part of my life and my blog is a record of my life.
ReplyDeleteAlso, I can relate to the benefits you've posted. And that second photo is perhaps one of my faves from your outfits. :)
This is a great post, I think you look really fierce in the first 2 photos, you wouldn't guess that you're uncomfortable of cameras (or used to be) at all!
ReplyDeleteI would really love to start doing outfit photos, but i'm a bit uneasy about the idea so i'm not sure... plus i don't have a tripod or someone who could take photos for me (until my best friend comes back from university) so i don't really know how i'd do it anyway lol ... someday!
I've always been a bit uncomfortable about other people taking photos so reading that it's made you a bit more comfortable about it makes me want to do it more!
xoxo
Love the post and your points and reasons.
ReplyDeleteI started posting online pics because I actually do have a corny story... I inspired a woman to break out of her comfort zone. The way i dress has always incited reaction but this time it affected me enough to make me think...maybe I could 'inspire' others...?
Lioness...you are so beautiful, in all ways... and you do write such heartfelt posts...
I am not a fashion blogger although I do sometimes talk about fashion on my blog. I do love looking at other people's pictures though. Maybe I will do a few in the future although my hubby is quite impatient at taking pictures!
ReplyDeleteI like reading about people's stories and lives. Outfits help tell that story although if the fashion blog is more like a fashion magazine and doesn't seem 'real' I lose interest very quickly.
You look lovely in your photos!
This is a really interesting post! As you probably know, I often don't have outfit pictures on my blog. It's something I want to change, but just need to get a good camera first! I tend to cringe when I see my mug on a screen as well. Eek!
ReplyDelete:)SarahD
I find blogging outfits a good way of getting a reality check on how I'm doing. It's also helped my confidence a lot and serves as a personal record of how my style has changed.
ReplyDeleteYou write the most thought provoking posts x
Aww you are gorgeous - you shouldn't hide! I commend all bloggers who take photos of themselves and put them out there because the internet can be cruel. It's a brave thing to do.
ReplyDeleteI Love this post!!!! I have lately been thinking about the effects of blogging on my style and I have noticed it shows who I am and it gets me more creative and more willing to step out of my comfort zone and a an increase in confidence.
ReplyDeleteThe reason why I started a personal style blog was to chronicle what I wore and to get my fashion musings off my chest. Because I talk about clothes sooo much in real life too.
This was a well written blog. I'm quite the opposite of who I follow. I follow people who have something to say and have a personality. I don't follow people who just post pictures. I want to feel like I know that person. I like bloggers who post outfits everyday. I wish I could and most people wish they could but can't because they have no one to take pictures of them. I like people who have more than fashion on their page. My main focus is on fashion but also on my page I let people in on whats going on in my life. I started blogging because I hope of one day becoming a fashion stylist and hopefully can help someone.
ReplyDeleteOutfit posts are definitely one of my favourite parts of reading a blog. I love being in front of the camera, hehe, so I love doing outfit shots. But mainly, it's about keeping a visual of my wardrobe. It's good to know what you have and the more outfit posts I've done, the more experimentative I've become with outfits.
ReplyDeleteI like reading blogs with outfit posts as it's nice to get inspiration.
I love outfit posts because I love to see how real people dress (as opposed to models dressed by stylists). It took me a while to be brave enough to go beyond the product pics and post shots of me wearing the items - still not entirely confident doing it, but can't ask others to do something on their blogs that I'm not prepared to do myself so just have to get on with it! xx
ReplyDeleteWe Shop Therefore We Are
Similarly to you, most of the blogs I follow post outfits regularly, so when I first started I figured I should do the same. Since then I added more features to my blog, (despite my hiatus) and I intend to continue to do so, because I don't like blogs where their sole content is outfits. Now I intend to do outfit posts to help document my wardrobe, to improve my being in front of a camera and to also help my own body image, and perhaps to help other women see that you don't need to be tiny and petite to dress well and look pretty, beauty comes in all shape & size packages! :)
ReplyDeleteOne thing I noticed too was my body shape. After having a baby my body shape is completely different. To be honest I like it more the way it is now, but from taking pictures I have gotten to realize I can wear different clothing and it looks good on me, when the stuff I use to wear isn't quite so flattering. Anyways...I really liked what you said about getting to see into the life/personality of people through pictures. btw all the pictures you posted here are some of my favorites of you! And that red lipstick really suits you.
ReplyDeleteI no longer have a style blog and thus no longer do outfit posts, but I think that the 18+ months that I spent doing so did help me in all the ways that you listed. I still like to peruse style blogs, but I prefer the ones that do outfit posts to those that don't.
ReplyDeleteMy favorite blogs are often ones that feature outfit posts as well. I just love to see what other people are wearing and it's a great source of inspiration. When I started my blog I had intended for it to be mostly outfit posts. But when you don't have anyone to take photos for you and no one in your "real life" knows about the blog, it becomes pretty difficult. I still hope to start including more outfit posts as often as possible though!
ReplyDeleteYour benefits for posting outfit photos are spot on. I think the best thing is that it really does help you to become more aware of your body and you can see what shapes and styles work best for you. It's very helpful for that reason!
Great post. I like blogs with a mixture of outfit posts and posts on other topics as well. My life isn't one-dimensional- I don't dress up all the time. Posts on other topics are great conversation-starters too.
ReplyDeleteI like to document my wardrobe and it serves as inspiration when I am feeling stuck in a rut... Taking outfit posts has made me MUCH more confident and happier in myself so it has only ever been a positive experience for me :)
ReplyDeleteMaria xxx
This was so interesting, reading about wehy you post outfit photos I definitely recognised a lot of why I do it too. I definitely do get inspiration from all the bloggers with great style I follow, but it's also so much about connecting with the person behind the blog as well. As you say being able to connect an outfit to the bloggers life - this is what I wore to go out for coffee or whatever is what I really love about outfit photos.
ReplyDeleteI think I blog about fashion and about personal style for the same reason as you, I love seeing my outfit posts a several months after and find out new combinations for my own clothes, of course following other fashion bloggers is a great inspiration too but also as you say to know the person... because maybe is like us thousands of miles away, different language, different culture and still have so many things in common and maybe learn a lot about their own world. Hope we still blog in a long time Leia! It's been a pleasure meeting you ;)
ReplyDeleteyou are lovely. i love seeing everyones pictures! esp yours :)
ReplyDeleteI totally agree!! Some of my favorite bloggers are these group of girls who blog in "Modesty" wear- they dress super, super, super conservatively and in a way that I wouldn't dare to. However, I love their blog because I give their words value and enjoy seeing that side of someone else, it's so interesting. So I totally get what you mean. I love your outfit posts (and you're crazy about not thinking your face looks pretty), I'm still dying to dress in the cultural dress you get to sport, I would seriously kill to have a chance to wear what you wear! I just have no reason here to in the States, ugh.
ReplyDeleteI post photos of myself...to break out of a rut that it would be too easy to fall into at my age.
ReplyDeleteJust bumped into your blog through Tanvi's!
ReplyDeleteI could relate a lot to this post. I love dressing up but am not a 'fashionista'. I love shopping for clothes and shoes(who doesn't?) but its not because fashion is my life. In fact far from it!
I follow all kinds of blogs provided they have a personal touch to them. I dont like following blogs that just post the latest spring collection or pictures fashion weeks and whats 'in or 'out' 'coz i just cant relate to that!
I only follow personal style blogs with a personal touch! Its always fun to read about that person and know a little more about them through their outfits!
Wow, that first outfit with the black pants makes you look supermodel skinny! Really great look!
ReplyDeleteGreat post! I too have found many benefits to posting outfit photos of myself. I actually attribute it to helping me build a better functioning wardrobe. When you're life is uploaded, online and public it really makes you examine what you're wearing and whether or not it works for you. I personally learned a lot of the items I owned weren't really "me" and instead learned to just buy the stuff I really liked instead of what I thought I should be wearing. It also really allows you to see how stuff fits you and flatters you. My tailor has become my best friend!
ReplyDeleteI totally agree with you about every single point that comes out of doing outfit posts! I never wanted my blog to be about outfit posting, but I do add some pics of me from time to time for a particular reason. :)
ReplyDeletex
Hey! Am commenting for the first time here.....& I totally connect with this post!
ReplyDeleteWhat started out as an attempt at doing something just coz the initial few bloggers that I came across did it....slowly & sincerely turned into a passion. I've always been the one who's equally excited in front of the lens as behind it....hence, my blog regularly features either my outfit posts or my photography posts! And yes, blogging has given me confidence, the chance of being known to others & of course, lots & lots of lovely acquaintances (I don't know if I can call them "friends" yet)....and I have a feeling that I'm gonna get a lot more out of this hobby in the future... :)
P.S.: Congratulations on making it to the Links a la Mode!!! :))
Hi! I've just found your blog through Links a la Mode.
ReplyDeleteI really like your outfit posts. I've only just started doing occasional outfit posts recently. My primary motivation for doing so was to challenge myself to be more creative when getting dressed in the morning rather than wearing the same old things day in and day out. I also work from home and wanted to motivate myself to dress up a bit more. I'm finding that doing outfit posts is making me think more about what I wear, it's building my confidence in front of the camera (like you, I feel very self conscious in front of the camera) and I'm (slowly) learning more about photography too.
Thanks for such a great article.
I do outfit posts daily and a little other content here and there, and that's basically what I like in the blogs I read, too. I think doing outfit posts gives me a reason to make an effort not to just be a schlub, and it has helped me feel better about how I look as well.
ReplyDeleteI love outfit posts, I prefer them to fashion editorials sometimes. that last one of you is awesome!
ReplyDeleteanyways, I started posting outfits b/c I've always always loved clothes (esp vintage) and was living in a small town where most people really do not. My friends were mostly guys who were bored to death by clothes. So it was my way of reaching out to other girly girls like myself, I guess. Frankly, I love my personal style and want to share it with others. I read outfit posts b/c I want to be inspired and also live vicariously through clothes, hair and makeup that others can pull off or afford but I can't (like platinum blonde hair for example)
Girl you are beautiful. I can't see why you would ever be ashamed to be in front of the camera. I too like outfit pics however, I would much prefer an interesting story to go along with the pics rather than just a random rambling about outfit details. I don't know. I follow some of each-for different reasons.

Firstly you're absolutely gorgeous and I'm very glad you got yourself into doing Outfit posts because you have a fab sense of style!
ReplyDeleteSecondly Im not tooo sure why I started getting into outfit posting, it's kind of a bit like what you say you like - I like to show my readers who I actually am,what I like to wear and my style/personality. I only post them about once a week the rest of the week I focus on other stuff but I like that personal injection it makes me feel more like my blog is >mine<
I love your blog :) very glad I stumbled across it and I'm following you now - look forward to hearing more about you and seeing more of your fab style showcased!
