For over a year, I've been fully embracing the maxi trend when it comes to dresses, but till now I had shied away from maxi skirts. I imagined they would be overpowering and difficult to style: I didn't really want to look like I had just stepped out of the '70s, but it can be hard to update 'retro' trends that are back in fashion.
I bought this skirt on a whim when it went on sale at Motel, not sure if it would suit me or if I had anything to wear with it. It can be really difficult to pull together outfits when you're travelling and carrying less than 10% of your wardrobe, but I ended up reaching for this waistcoat c/o Dorothy Perkins which I found from my Take 10 days (seen here) that I thought I would never wear again! I think it went well with the boho vibe, don't you agree? I tried it both tucked into my skirt as well as tucked out; I think I prefer the latter.
Maxi skirts are also great for transitional weather. I wore this out on a day which started off cold, became hot and sunny, and then cooled down again - and I was perfectly comfortable all the way through! It's so nice when unexpected purchases turn out to be well-loved items.
I think shorter girls are under the misconception that they can't wear maxis - well, I think in some cases, the opposite is true! Maxi skirts can make you look tall - as though your legs go on forever - especially if they're high-waisted. I'm barely 5'5" and I wear maxis all the time!
This is unrelated and will probably make me very unpopular, but I'm with Vivienne Westwood on this one. While it seems as though much of the female population has gone gaga for Kate Middleton's style, I've always thought it rather ordinary (granted, she can't be too 'out there' due to her position, but then there's no need to deem her a style icon when her style is very plain. Elegant, polished, and refined, yes, but fashionable... no). I feel the same way about Michelle Obama - I don't think she's very stylish (quite the opposite, actually!) - but she really doesn't have to try to be a style maven given all the other, more wonderful qualities she has (intellect, power, and being an all-around great role model for young women). To be honest, I'd rather have those qualities than be a fashion icon! I'm not trying to be rude or nasty; I'm just saying that it really stumps me when ladies with rather boring style (which is perfectly fitting for their lifestyles) are regarded as fashion icons, when instead we should just be honest about who they are and celebrate their fantastic qualities. (I'm going to be extremely unpopular after this paragraph and my proclamation about Mary Kate and Ashley!)
P.S. It's my birthday on Friday! I'm turning 23. I've never really made a huge deal about my birthday - I normally have a family dinner and a small get-together with my close friends - but this year it seems like it'll be quite an eventful one. One of my friends was born only two days after me, so we're thinking about having a 'birthday weekend' and packing in lots of fun activities, so that should be great! Oh, and I've finally decided to buy myself a decent dSLR camera as a birthday present... I've been putting it off because I thought it would be hard work to learn how to use one and they're heavy and I thought it would be annoying to carry one around, but I think it's time to bite the bullet and take the plunge! (Advice & recommendations are welcome!)

This maxi is amazing - really suits you!
ReplyDeletehi, love that skirt on u. need to buy maxi skirt asap;)
ReplyDeleteLeia, the skirt is lovely on you...I've not jumped on this maxi trend completely (have given it a shot) because it just doesn't FEEL right on me. But after seeing you in this skirt, I may have to try it again!
ReplyDeleteRegarding Kate Middleton, I'm RIGHT. THERE. WITH YOU! Her style is just very plain. And as you said, that's fine; but let's not label her a style icon. I clicked on your link about MKA Olsen and that was FUNNY! The pictures you referred to seriously could have been homeless people. Again, they've never been a style inspiration to me. I'm sure they are wonderfully sweet women, but style-wise? Not feeling it! Hugs to you my friend and enjoy that birthday! ~Serene
You look very pretty :-)

hi leia! the maxi skirt suited you so well and the color just lools lovely on you! i can understand how comfy it must be the whole day :) i've been collecting pleated maxis myself.
ReplyDeletewell, regarding the olsen twins, they dress with a lot of layers. but i really admire their business sense :)
Dear God yessssssssssss!!! Kate Middleton is well dresed, sure..maybe but lets not go overboard and start calling her a fashionista or style icon or anything to that effect. LOL about the MKA comment..they do dress like the derelict don't they?
ReplyDeleteLike the maxi skirt on you. Have a happy birthday :)
That skirt is very pretty, I definately agree that a maxi length is really flattering on shorter girls!
ReplyDeleteHappy Birthday! Your pleated skirt looks fabulous!!

Love the skirt, very pretty! I have never done the maxi, precisely because I thought I was too short, but with your encouragement, I will give it a try. After my shopping ban.
ReplyDeleteLove the skirt on you - I'm just so enamoured of pleats! And I agree with you about Kate Middleton. I personally quite like her style but I would never consider her a fashion icon - it's just basic and chic but nothing insane.

I wonder if Kate Middleton would be dressing with similar styles if she were not affliated with royalty. If she were just a regular 20 something year old, I think her outfits are a little on the matronly side. However, for her lifestyle, I think it's definitely appropropriate. But not a style I would want to duplicate myself.
ReplyDeleteBTW- Congrats on getting the DSLR :) I use a Nikon myself, so I would vote for one of those!
I love maxis and that one looks great on you. At 5ft11 i find it hard to get ones long enough.
ReplyDeleteYour pleated skirt is really awesome.. Suits you well...

That is such a pretty skirt!
ReplyDeleteA) Love the color of your skirt. I too love them ... who cares what height you are when they are so comfy and feminine to wear and twirl around in.
ReplyDeleteB) I SHARE your thoughts about all the ladies you have mentioned. We really have A LOT in common :)
C) You should make a big deal about your birthday. It only comes once a year and hey! the world needs to celebrate your birth. It would have one less intelligent girl. And we all know we are a rare breed! :P

Gorgeous skirt, I was tempted with buying it but I don't like to bulk out my waist if you know what I mean. I love how you've styled it too.
ReplyDeleteAs for cameras if you ask a Nikon owner they will say Nikon and if you ask a Canon owner they will say Canon! I own a Nikon D60 which I think is a really good first DSLR, it's easy to use and takes lovely photos. It's probably been surpassed by a new model as I've had mine a few years but I'd still say it's good.
I love the skirt! Happy early birthday :)
ReplyDeleteYou are super gorgeous!! :] I love your blog! :]
ReplyDeleteYou look so pretty in that maxi it's fantastic!!!!!!!
ReplyDeleteAlso I agree with you on Kate Middleton and Michelle Obomas style, it's definitly nothing too spectacular. But I do like MK&A's style...
I've been putting off wearing the maxi silhouette only because of my height.....but you sure are inspiring me to give it a try!! :)
ReplyDeleteI absolutely agree about Kate Middleton. I think she's actually quite safely dressed & well-turned out, but not worth being called a fashion diva! There are other much more fashionable people all around the world who go unnoticed...
As for your birthday, have a blast girl!! You deserve to celebrate your special day in special ways!! And if you're planning to buy a DSLR, I'll recommend a Nikon D90. :)
looking 'berry' nice! ;) Love the color of the skirt.. its such a rich colour!
ReplyDeleteHappy birthday on Friday! A dSLR is a great gift to yourself. I saved up and spent a small chunk of money on one a few years ago and have never regretted it.
ReplyDeleteOh, and I agree with you on the whole fashion icon thing. And if you voicing your opinion makes you unpopular, so be it, I guess. Sounds like at least a few of us agree with you on that though.
I love all maxi skirts! And you're so right - they make you appear taller (what a misconception right?). And I'm so happy for your birthday!! (maybe I should send you a little something?) How can you be such a modest, mature and down-to-earth, smart girl when you're just 23?? (I kind of thought you were older - not judging by your looks of course! I'm even more impressed with you now). Hugs!
ReplyDeletewoah. i love this look! ive totally stayed away from maxi skirts b/c of my short height. i'll have to try it! :D
ReplyDeleteHappy early birthday!
ReplyDeleteOn your skirt-- I actually prefer it tucked in. When you have it tucked out, I feel like it floods your frame, but tucked in, it looks very pretty!
On Kate Middleton-- I actually think she is a bit of a style icon. I don't think it's necessarily the clothes she wears, but the way she wears them (similar to Ashley & MK). There is a grace that Kate wears those "boring" clothes, similar to Audrey & Jackie O that is why people clamor to call her a style icon. With MK & Ashley, I think it's similar--though in a grunge sense. And while yes I sometimes think they look homeless they also pull off some really amazing looks (I'm not a follower, so I don't have any pictures on hand). And ehh grunge/boho never really dies down. It always holds a bit of a place in the fashion world, whether it steers the majority or minority is what fluctuates.
happy 23rd to yuo. i wolud recommend a nikon d90 with an 18-105mm lens.
ReplyDeleteWhat a beautiful skirt x
ReplyDeleteAh I'm buying a DSLR for myself too as my birthday's next Wednesday! I think it'll definitely be worth it, can't wait to become a proper photography buff! Hope you have a great day on Friday, I've only got a week left of being 23, enjoy it...
ReplyDeleteThat is a pretty skirt! I like the tucked in look, very gypsy-ish, combined with your hair. :)
ReplyDeleteAlso, advanced happy 23rd! What will you and your friends be doing? :)
It looks great! I love the last shot, so very flirty!
ReplyDeleteFirstly you look awesome! I really love the skirt on you, and I *really* love the way you've styled the old Dorothy Perkins waistcoat to make it work for you.
ReplyDeleteOn Kate Middleton... I completely agree she is no style icon, but honestly I feel sorry for her. I mean even if she wanted to dye her hair blue and wear ripped jeans or whatever she can't really. Maybe she would have rather eloped and got married on a beach in Thailand in a bikini instead of wearing a massive dress and being on tv, but we'll never know.
Given the option of her guilded cage I wouldn't choose it for all the Reiss dresses in the world.
Gooorgeous. Sigh.
ReplyDeleteAnd as for your topic, I totally agree. Kate clearly is not interested in fashion. She is not looking to upstage Princess Di in that department. And that's fine. Every woman has different interests. So, yeah, I totally agree that it is SO SILLY to call her a style icon. She is beautiful, she has a lovely sense of style, but she's not ground-breaking in any way, shape, or form. Let's be real. Same with Michelle Obama. Lovely woman, but definitely no Jackie O. And again, she's obviously not trying to compete! Lol.
Happy early birthday! I am so excited for you. I hope it is such a wonderful weekend with your hubby and your family and your friends. You deserve it. xoxo
Such a pretty skirt. I still haven't fully embraced maxi's, buty our one looks great. I love the colour.
ReplyDeleteI think that's what I really like about Kate: she's not stylish. She doesn't try to hard and the simple/ordinary look kinda really works. I definitely prefer her to the likes of Gaga who's ridiculous with her style. But yes, I would much rather have qualities such as intellect than be a fashion icon.
Happy Birthday!!
ReplyDeleteI adore pleats and you look stunning!
ReplyDeleteHappy birthday!
:)
xx
Hey! birthday!!! I love my birthday... I feel super special! so you should feel super special too ;) you look so tall with that skirt... great look Leia!
ReplyDeleteBeautiful skirt -- I love the colour and the pleats!
ReplyDeleteAlso, a very happy birthday, Leia! ♥ You deserve a big bash!
As for style, I don't think Vivienne Westwood should be one to talk about whether or not Kate is/isn't a style icon. Ms. Westwood dresses (assuming we aren't bringing into consideration her spunky collections --I love a lot of her pieces) in funky, near outlandish outfits. And that's fine, because that's her! So if Kate is polished, refined, simple... and maybe even boring to some people, I think that's fine too. Clothes are so subjective, who is to say whether one person has style or not?
Although.. that being said... I really do agree with you on Mary Kate & Ashley. I think they try way too hard to be cool in style, and they just aren't most of the time.
Hmm, I hope this won't offend anybody. I wrote this as an honest opinion, and with a smile on my face. :) Love your posts!!
What a great maxi! That color is great on you xo
ReplyDeleteget a canon eos 60D or a canon powershot g11......they're really, really good a photographing and they last for a lifetime. they are a bit expensive but the pictures you take of your life are priceless!!
ReplyDeletea) I love the skirt on you~ B) that's so funny about Kate but I would have to disagree, I think her style is impeccable for what she exudes. I love more rebellious looks like Carri's style on Sex and the City for instance but I don't expect crazy from Kate, I expect a Royal look and she does it very well. C) haha, I understand why people don't like the Olsens' style but I LOVE IT!!!! It is so amazing and innovative I think. Not for everyone but they definitely know what they're doing.
ReplyDeleteI like the maxi with the vest over it rather than tucked in, in keeping with the boho vibe.
ReplyDeleteFor me Kate M and Mrs O are chic because they wear ordinary clothes/labels and make them look good proving you don't need designer labels to look good or chic. That's their appeal to me anyway.
What a beautiful color! I love how you have styled it. I live for maxis.

looking perfect on u !!
ReplyDeleteI really love maxi skirts. I can't really seem to get on with maxi dresses but skirts work much better for me. I am only 5ft 2 but think the slimmer fit skirts work well.
ReplyDeleteHappy Birthday for Friday. I hope taht you have a lovely day. I have a Nikon D40 camera which is incredibly easy to use and I have found it great. The only problem is the size for when I am out and about. I am now considering getting a smaller camera for trips out.
Wishing you a fabulous birthday tomorrow, may all your dreams come true!
ReplyDeleteLoving this berry pleated skirt on you... it's such a versatile piece, i'm sure you'll have plenty of wears and styling to play with.
On the note about Middletons style, hmmm, i find it terrifically boring too. She looks elegant and every inch of perfection as she should do when in public and look good doing it, but her style is not for me.
I do love Reiss ( a brand she wear a lot) as well, but i prefer wearing their clothes another way.
x.o.x.o
i love the maxi skirt trend but feel as though it doesnt suit me :-( happy nearly birthday.
ReplyDeleteYou look nice in your maxi skirt. You look like- senorita from the song of film ZMND. Don't know if you have seen/heard about it.
ReplyDeleteHappy Birthday in advance, Our Birthdays fall in the same month. I am having an eventful Birthday bash too.
Yo go for DSLR. Enjoy.
You look so glamorous!

I'm wearing a maxi skirt this weekend. I will post it next week.
ReplyDeleteThe skirt looks great and it's lovely to see you getting some wear out of our very 1st Take10 item - it looks really good with the skirt. xx
ReplyDeleteThat maxi skirt is just gorgeous. It really suits you! I agree that the way Kate Middleton dresses is quite safe and sensible, but she is so polished and pretty, I can't help but like some of the outfits she wears. HAppy Birthday for tomorrow!!! :)SArahD xx
ReplyDeletei love the skirt and ill agree with miss westwood about kates eyeliner. haha! and even tho shes is a bit ordinary in her style im still obsessed.
ReplyDeleteAhh... the pleated skirt is just perfect on you leia..
